We are looking at a JD 8400 with 8400 hours. We will be using it to
pull a 14 yard dirt pan. We have owned 4960,8760,9400,9420
using them for same purpose . None of the tractors we owned had
over 5000 hours nor did we have any major engine problems. We
sold 9420 two moths ago as we are scaling down business. we are
wanting a smaller tractor to build small sites and ponds. How
many hours on the 8000 series tractors before you need to roll a
bottom end in? On the 4960 we had transmission and rear end
trouble. Are the 8000 transmission and rear end any stronger than
previous row crops? I talked to the farmer that traded it in and
says its a good clean tractor used daily on his farm. He is just
upgrading. they are asking 60k for it. Any help appreciated.

Ive been involved with an 8420, and for what it has been put through I'd say they are a pretty tough tractor. This one has spent probably 4000 of its 8000 hours on a 1000 bushel grain cart, driven by going guys who only know the words WIDE OPEN THROTTLE. The power shift took a dump after 6000 hours of abnormal abuse and the engine took one injector at close to 8000 hours, but the rest of the tractor is untouched. Any tractor can give trouble, but I'm impressed with the durability of the 8000 series. If you plan to put a heavy drawbar load on it Deere has a support that can be installed. The draw bar did break on this 8420 before the support was installed. Jim
