John Deere 855 - Air Intake System Question

Hi All,
I recently purchased a John Deere 855. In doing maintenance to the air filter and eventually cleaning the radiator, I noticed that there appears to be an opening on the air intake canister and I haven't yet figured out what is supposed to cover it or connect it to. (bottom left is open) I still need to get my hands on a service manual, but was hoping that one of you might be able to point me in the right direction on what is supposed to connect to this opening on the bottom left, as it is currently open. The power on this tractor is low when I go up hills and pull things, so I am doing a general maintenance starting with the air filter, cleaning the radiator, fuel filter, etc. with the hope that this will help. Thanks in advance!

The port at the bottom left is where air enters the air cleaner assembly, the tractor doesn't use an air stack so air is simply drawn in from the area ahead of the radiator that's been screened of large debris by the grille screen.

Parts catalog doesn't show anything connected there.

Wore Out, thank you very much for the reply and sharing the link. That makes sense. Much appreciated!

Wore out covered your air cleaner question, and gave you a link to the parts catalog.

For general maintenance the Operator's manual is the better thing to have than a service/technical manual. The SM/TMs are more for diagnostics and repairs. If you don't have a copy of the Operator's manual for your 855 John Deere has made most of their operator's manuals available for a free download copy from their bookstores.

If you don't have a copy, here is a link to the bookstore: JD Ag & Turf Bookstore

Once on that homepage, click on the Equipment Publications tab. When that page opens enter 855 in the box beside Model # and search. You should get a dropdown list of equipment with 855 in the model #. Click on 855 in the list, that should open another list of just 855 items. Look down the list to Tractors - Base Units-North America. It appears there are four serial number ranges, for North America (guessing you have a NA unit), to pick from, select the range your tractor serial number falls in. When it opens the list of manuals for that serial number range, you should see Operator's Manual, click on it. They are available in several languages so pick the one you want (clicking on them opens them so you can see the language) and to the right of that it should say have a download icon or say Download. Click on the icon (or download) and it will download a free pdf copy of the Operator's Manual to your device which you can then save to your device. You can also print the download . If you want a book or CD the prices for those are shown below that, they are not free. The technical manual options are there if you chose to purchase, those are not free. HTH

Excellent information, thank you Jim. This is very helpful. I'm grateful for the information and support. Have a good one!
