Does the john deere A has two 6 volt batteries?

Originally, some of the 12 Volt JD Two Cylinder Tractors, including late A's, see diagram, used two six volt batteries in series. However, most and including myself when it came time to replace them, especially with todays batteries, I used a single 12 Volt High CCA or High Amp Hour big heavy duty battery. Be sure to arrange some hold down or other assembly so the battery cant slide or move around in the box. For starting an A in extreme cold temperature, I liked at least a 900 or even over 1000 CCA rated 12 volt battery, although sure, a much smaller one can get you by. If you like a smaller one that's your choice.

High John T, this is a stupid question but I thought the john deere a was a 6volt system, how can you use a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt system now I am confused Thanks

Ok stupid me you had a 12 volt system from factory.
when you connect 2 six volt batteries together in parallel you connect negative to negative and .positive to positive but you still have 6 volts right?

Hook the 1st battery positive to ground, then negative from 1st battery to the positive on the 2nd battery. Then the negative on the 2nd battery to the starter. 12 volts..

If you connect them in parallel you would still have 6V.

Which is why you don't do that, you connect them in series.

The late A with the battery box seat was 12 volt, so was the G. The B remained 6 volt.

The early A's were six volt, see diagram. Later were 12 volt with two six volt batteries wired in SERIES, 6 + 6 = 12.

I've got a 12 volt battery hooked up to my 6 volt B. Sure turns over faster for starting. I happened to have a 12 volt generator, so I went for it. I realize eventually it will probably burn out the starter, but that dragging 6 volt battery was driving me nuts!

I changed my '48 B over to 12V about 15 years ago. The 6V starter is still working perfectly. I think it's a lot less strain on the starter to only have to crank for 2 or 3 seconds to start than the much longer time it took with 6 volts.
