John Deere A flywheel pin

Problems

I was looking at the flywheel on my 1940 john deere A and noticed the pin was severely warn. Half the pin was gone, it's a shame I didn't take any pictures. I eventually got it out by welding on top of the pin and after some wiggling got it out. But what I pulled out was a bolt instead of a pin. I'm guessing someone couldn't get a new one and decided to put a bolt in instead. Luckily the bolt is the same diameter as the pin, but it is much longer. Should I just hit the new pin in using the flywheel spacer to get the proper height? I was thinking the pin would eventually move down flush with the flywheel, instead of being where it should be. Or should I cut the bolt I pulled out to act as a spacer in the hole?

You can always relocate that pin to a different spline if that one is broken or out of place ? The location does not matter as long as you rotate the slinger to engage the pin.

Set the pin so the square sets flush with the flywheel. Square should be protruding. If the pin is loose in the hole just drill a new hole and go with it. It's not timed to anything, just turns the slinger with the crank and flywheel.
