In reference to the post below, I have a flywheel on my 41 ar, It has been machined for a starter ring , and it is a a2449r flywheel. Would this be a proto type. My parts book does not show one with starter ring. I hope somebody can tell me why or what this is. Thanks

I think you are correct; a proto type or a reject that got out. Both part books, PC 674 and 675 show casting number flywheel A2449R as a hand crank flywheel, for JD A and AR.... And for your 1941 AR would be a hand crank flywheel...

Maybe someone turned the flywheel in preparation for converting it to electric start and then gave up on the project.

There were some people that converted them to electric start using the existing flywheel I believe grandpas has one of these. I witnessed a classmate cut one off his because he was tired of the electric start not working didn’t like how the ring gear felt on his hands and that’s what he did was cut the ring gear with a torch and pop off it came. It was nice of someone to take the ring gear off for you. I think it was pretty common. Grandpas starter isn’t original that’s how I learned this was a thing that was done

I believe John Deere sold a kit to convert them to electric start. I have seen a few with a hand crank flywheel with a ring gear. On every one I've seen the crankshaft & flywheel marking matched. They sported a slant dash & push button starter solenoid. One was a 4speed on steel. Many B's were changed too.
