John Deere A hood removal

We have a John Deere A, aprox a 1950 model, I am curious about how best to remove the hood. This tractor has not run in about 30 years but it was running when it was parked and still turns over. It was parked due to bearing failure on a transmission shaft. I would like to get the hood off so I can size up some other repairs and see if this thing is even worth fooling with. I have an I&T service manual on it but it"s not very helpful. If there is a website that covers things like this, I have not found it. Thank you

the first thing to do is take off the front grilles and hood medallion. not very hard just take out some bolts. next thing is to pull the cover off the end of the end of the pedistal (the one on the side not the top requires taking out two 3/4 in bolts) you do this to take out the steering shaft. after you take off the steering wheel the shaft should just screw out. next is to disconnect the fuel line from the sediment bowl. next you should have a couple of wires that run from your dash to your generator you need to disconect them however you are able. and while your at it take the dash off the hood to. and if im thinking right the last thing to do would be is to remove a bolt on the top of the govener hosing on an "L" shaped bracket that hooks on the bottom of the hood. sounds like alot of work have fun

Thanks, Adam. Getting the steering shaft off was the big question. I figured that it might have something to do with the cover you mentioned but I wanted to ask around for sure. The grill and related covers are off this machine and are pretty much trashed. The hood is not too good either and the kerosene tank is rusted out. I basically wanted to get the hood off so I can tidy up the water and air lines and then see if I can get it to run. I did a little work on it few years ago changing the engine oil, put oil in the spark plug holes, plugs, wires, etc. Believe it our not, the starter still worked and the mag still fired afer sitting up for 25 years or more. However, we were not trying to crank it at the time since the fuel system needed work. I have the rebuilt carb in my garage and will only install it when I get these other things done.
