Can you remove and replace the shaft by only removing the bearing cover? Styled hand crank John Deere A about a 1943 model.

On my 1938 AR the PTO shaft had been twisted off just where the cross-bold hole went through the shaft. All I had to do was drop the oil out of the rear end to a point below the PTO and back out the threaded packing nut. My tractor proved to be easy,,no need to open case top. To avoid oil drip around PTO I installed new packing which I obtained from my JD dealership. The actual PTO shaft was obtained from a parted out junker. Best wishes.
