John Deere A Puller

My son and I were thinking about building or buying an A John Deere to tractor pull with. Is it cheaper and maybe easier to buy one or to build one? Also which year A's seem to work the best for pulling. We have had a couple old 60's and are fond of them, but would be afraid that they are too heavy and too hard to lighten up.
Thank you,
Charlie

The easy and cheapest way would be to buy one already built. I would recommend building one though because you know exactly what you've got. Plus it is time to spend with the kids. On a budget a 50-52 A doesn't require as much motor work as an earlier A because of a slower transmission. There isn't much diffrence in the wieght between a late model A and a model 60. I would recommend talking to Tripple G service, Murpheys Motor Service, Extreme Tractor Parts, and Schooler Motor Sports before building or buying and discuss options depending on how wild or mild you want to go.

Why would you want to buy someone elses creation? It's a personality thing, Pullers sing the praises of other pullers but wouldn't pull another mans tractor cause it would have the other man's name all over it, You understand what I am saying? Think of a pulling tractor like you would a custom street rod. A puller wouldn't sell a competitive tractor from his stable and then have to pull against it later. Many other reasons but, not enough time to relate here and now.
1948 to 1952 "A" cause they are more plentiful and you can get a tractor that came from the factory as a gas burner.

iam building a 51 a right now that i bought and was suppose to be already built,,dont make the same mistake i did..build one the first time and you will know what it is from the start. get on the pulling forum and get a hold of josh blackburn hes doing the motor stuff for my a...he can tell you what your choices are..if your looking to pull 6500lbs and up id build the 60..it has better carb and head. ive got a 60 iam working on now too.

Hey Charlie, I would suggest building your own. You would be surprised how reasonable you can get parts for. Give me a call and we can talk and figure out how much power your looking for 9892775366 Thanks

Just remember if you start getting worried about winning it will never be fun anymore.
My opinion is mildly build the tractor and then go have fun.

If you try to keep up with the people that show off all you will have is a big money pit and it won't make you happy.
