John Deere A stalling

I was mowing weeds with a flail mower the other day and the tractor sputtered and quit. I was able to get it started again and drive around without the PTO engaged. When I engaged the PTO it didn't sound like it was loading down the engine but after 30 seconds it quit again. I had bee mowing for a couple of hours. The engine did not look like it was over heating. It was able to operate fine without the PTO engaged. Any suggestion as to what the problem might be?

Turn off the pto and unhook the flail mower. Hook up something heavy to the draw bar like a wagon or
a truck/car. If it still sputters when you tow something around it's probably the coil. If you have
another tractor with a magneto you could swap magnetos and see if the problem goes away.

YT has coils for your A. See attached for X series magnetos. They also have coils for C series
magnetos.

Check for fuel first, Drain open on bottom of carb, I belive it is a pint in 2 minutes.
If not that fast then something pluged.
