John Deere A

I have a styled jd A its a 524 serial number what do i have to do to make it a good puller ive heard of changing the drive gears to a newer style A i have no idea i am rebuilding the engine now and i have it all apart so any help would be appriciated.

If you want to slow it down some to take advantage of the creeper gears the later As had, you'll have to get both the 1st reduction gear and the clutch pulley gear from a mid 1950 - 1952 A for it to work.

It will slow it down some but it still won't be as slow as the later As with the different gears. Not sure if you can take all gears from later As and put in yours or not. Someone else will have to answer that, but I have taken just the 2 gears I mentioned and slowed down a 1935 model A for pulling.

People have told me to bore the block 125 over and get high compression pistons. If you have the engine apart now may be the time to have this done. You might need some head work too but the extra power you gain here may help better for pulling than slowing it down.

I wouldnt bore to +.125 unless necessary to clean the cylinder up. You will gain a whooping 2HP from the extra displacement. There are easier and cheaper ways to gain 2HP

I have done some pulling with various years of model A's. If you want to save money I have seen good pulls with stock motor and trannys. To do this you use the individual brakes for the wheels and you "walk down the track". Also make sure that you have good traction tires. Good Luck

I have a 51A with the creeper gear in it and wish that it didn't. first of all, because of the year and the gear I usually end up pulling in 3 plow class. second, it seems to put too much torque to the ground for the tires I have 13.6x38, and I always spin out. I could put larger tires on it, but I like it looking original. just the cross I have to bear.
