i bought a JD a this week, took it on a 25 mile tractor ride and made about 5 miles before it quit. started off fine but the clucth started slipping in high gear and then it backfired a couple times and quit running. i pulled it to the side of the road and went back about two hours later it fired right up and ran fine again. gas tank is clean to trash in tank or lines, what else could it be?

Coil or Condenser. I would replace points and condenser and coil as they are not expensive. I would also get new wires and use Autolite 3116 plugs too.

More than likely coil but I've seen a lot of people put those plastic inline fuel filters on I had one on a all fuel b once tractor got warm the heat from the manifold heated that plastic enough that the filter collapsed let it cool down and would run fine till got warm again

I think it is the coil also. I agree that it won't hurt to change points and plugs. Your clutch is a separate problem. Either adjust or replace it.

Are you using Carbon-core Plug Wires..??

They Must be solid, LOW-Resistance Wires, as in "Continuous connection" from end-to-end..
But, this sounds like a bad Condenser or Bad Coil..

Ron.
