John Deere B Head

I'm trying to reinstall the head on my 1939 B and I noticed the new head gasket which I purchased from Yesterday's Tractors is made of different material. It DOES fit but according to my shop manual, it recommends to dip it in motor oil wipe off the excess before installing. My question is, is this necessary? I have never heard of this in all the engines I've rebuilt and could use some help! Also what is the recommended torque for the head nuts and is there a recommended torque pattern so I don't warp the head? Thanks for any help? God Bless!!!
