Hey, Can anyone help me get an answer to my son Joel in Tn about his 1950 John Deere B not starting? He power washed it to get grease and oil off rear wheels due to axle seal leaks. He covered the mag with plastic bag and tried to not get water on it. But when he uncovered it he now longer can get tractor to start. Turns over just fine, but no start. What should he check first? Please help, you can call him with answer at 602-679-4523.

Simple trouble shooting is needed.
#1check that it has a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#2 open the carb drain plug and make sure if has a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 2 minutes, and yes catch the gas to look for dirt/water.
#3 check the air filter and dump the mud and water out of it and fill with fresh oil.

Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the mag up and evaporate all the water out of it.

Maybe the wires got wet. Dry the mag and check spark thru the wires. May need to clean the points. Ron MN

Pop the cap off and let it air out overnight.

Easier to do on a distributor which by 1950 this might be??? and also easier to pop it off to dry sometimes those mags if they haven’t been regularly serviced cab be a bit more stuck on. I specifically remember a wico c that ran albeit poorly till I took it apart and the casing and rusted metal screw’s disintegrated. Some patience might be all it takes

Pop the cap off and (as posted) let it air dry or hit it with a shot of WD40. About the only thing it is good for…
It’s amazing what your phone can try to substitute for “shot”. Good thing I looked at my post before posting. 😎
