John Deere B Noise

ACH

New User
I recently got my 1946 john deere b running and it sounds like a knocking sound is coming from the clutch only some of the time. Does anyone have a suggestion on what it is or a solution for it.
Thanks

I had a noise like that in my '51 B. Turned out that the first reduction gear waqs loose on the tapered spline tranny input shaft.

You can check this by removing the clutch assembly, and then reaching into the first reduction gear case, and grab the gear. See if it wobbles around on the shaft.

Could also be that your main bearing needs to be adjusted, or the endplay of the crank needs to be adjusted. The B service manual has a good procedure outlined to check and adjust these items.

Let me know if you need anymore info.

Well I got it tore apart and the first reduction gear is not loose on the shaft but it has play front to back and around the bearing in the case. Do you have any suggestions on what to do next.

Thanks!

Sounds like you need bearings, lots of them.

Download the free parts catalogs from Deere. look at the "input shaft", there's a bearing in the side cover, there's also one IN the shaft. Might need others, but likely those for sure.
