John Deere B - Serial # Research Question

I have a question, and curious as to what other's serial number research requests are and thoughts as well. A neighbor has a 1939 John Deere B. His Dad bought it in 1940, so not knowing truly how it came new. He is going to get it restored and when I told him I could get it researched he was eager too and is happy no doubt getting it back the other day.

My question is it's serial number is in the 63xxx range, and on the research document it came back with: ab2000, 5.00x15, 4 ply front tires and steel rear wheels for 'B' (#96,000-).

Now with the serial number being well before 96,000 how does that work? I did email Two Cylinder as more curious then anything, and I know from reading dealers did switch many things back then. But how can something that wasn't even out yet be put on tractor? Thanks!

Are you referring to RUBBER tires, if so they were avail JD 39 A,S B S and so on from the FACT 39 B,S ,60000 and up Your Problem? Maybe i am miss understanding.

Sorry I got on a different tangent and forgot original question.

It says it came on steel from factory, but when his dad bought it it had rubber. But the tractor has round spokes not the flat steel spokes.

But yes I did question the 96,000 on up wheels on a 63xxx serialnumbered tractor. Not a big deal just trying to understand.

Back in the day it was not uncommon for a dealer to switch wheels on tractors on his lot to make a deal. My 1937 B was shipped on rubber, but was on steel wheels cut-off for rubber when I bought it. Dealer probably put the rubber wheels on another tractor, steel wheels on mine to get the price down. Unstyled tractors were all available on rubber if desired from the early-mid thirties on.

Yeah that does seem odd, how can a tractor come from the factory brand new with an option not available until a later model?.....The only thing I can think is maybe it was an early option that Deere didn't make more readily available as an until (96,000- )

Yeah I just thought it was strange! But I know things weren't as kept back then too, and it was still neat getting it for him, seeing the build date and ship and destination is mainly what I like.

I've been going to send off for mine too just don't feel like parting with the money yet, if I do one I may as well have all 8 done at once!
