John Deere B steering

What is the proper way of getting the sloppiness out of the steering on a 1943 John Deere B.Is it possible to raise the driven gear so the worm gear engages better? Thanks.

Have you replaced the two bearings at the front end of the worm near the screwed end. I had the same problem and both the front and rear bearings on that end were shot. There is also shims that can be added or removed in that area. if you need part numbers i can get them for you.

Is the eccentric bushing under the worm gear adjusted to position the worm gear closest to the worm? If there is forward-back play in the steering wheel shaft, the bearings on eache end of the worm are worn. You may be able to take up the play by removing shims from the bearing cap, otherwise replace them.
