john deere b

I have noticed that i have a possible problem. It pertains to the main case studs that hold down the engine block. There appears to be one broken and it is missing the nut. It is when looking at the engine block (from infront towards the rear tires). it is the upper right main case stud. Is there a way to fix this? i dont see any parts except the whole main case. Can i do without it?(noway right)! dreaming i guess now i have to repair something i never saw upon purchase...ouch. So any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

What do you plan to do with the tractor? If you aren't planning to work the snot out of it AND you don't have oil leaking from between block and main case, I'd ignore it - at least until such a time (later) when you need to remove the block for some other more pressing reason.

Here's an interesting thought: I have seen where those broken-off studs were so loose they could be backed out with an awl or ice pick! Should this prove true, you'd then be in great position to replace it!

Now - if you DO have oil leaking from between block and main case AND you cannot get the old stud out, gently tighten the remaining studs to see if you can reduce the leakage. Do not exceed 125 ft-lbs torque on these fasteners. If the leakage is severe, a new gasket is called for, and when you replace the gasket is the time to deal with the broken-off stud.

As for kicking yourself for not seeing that broken stud during the buy, consider yourself blessed if this is the only thing you missed! (PatB)

I agree with PB - Another option would be, If you have a left hand twist drill bit you just may get lucky and it will spin out while drilling. Good Luck

Well i already have the cyllinder block off pistons and rods out. Now debating the main case stud. There seems to be some leakage, when i bought it. It was not running and i have yet put it back together. I was thinking since im already there all i have to do is pull engine block, i already have the gaskets. i just dont want a nightmare.

If you are that far just finish the job right. I don't know what year B you have, but when you pull the block there will probably be an oil line that connects the block to the tractor. Make sure to disconnect that before pulling the block (DON'T ask how I know it is there).

just finished up. i was able to back the stud out after seperating the tractor and removing the cyllinder block.i just grabed the stud with vice grips and tapped them with a baby sledge and pb blast.took longer to remove all the other stuff. stud came out 1,2,3... if life were always that easy... now time to order parts and clean everything i took apart. thanks for the insight i'll be back for sum more....thank you
