When hand starting my tractor,it doesnt start very easy,it usally takes a dozen cranks.When it trys to start it will kick back about 4 revolutions,like the timing off a little,ls this normall,also one of my petcocks is wore and loose not staying open,would this make it kick some by having to much compression

IF it is kicking back. Your timing might be off. If it is hard-starting like mine was. I had to clean the carb. Remove everything from the carb you can. Including the brass drill plugs. Then you can get the proper drill bits. Hand driven of course and drill the passages out. Make sure the carb is set correctly. Idle screw from seated should be set around 1-1/2-2 turns out from seated. The Load needle should be set around 1/2-1 turns out from seated. Check your points to be sure they are up to snuff, no pitting, or whitening. If so, run a peice of emery cloth to touch them up a little. Have you checked your timing at all ? Does it have a mag or a distributor ? Does it have good plugs and wires also ?

If the tractor idles fine its not in the carb. How old are the plugs and other ignition components? Due for a tune up? Your timing is off.. loosen mag bolts and rotate the mag clockwise about 1/4".

Pull both spark plugs out and lay them on the top of the block (leave the respective wires on them). Roll the flywheel over slowly and STOP when the #1 (Flywheel side) spark plug fires. Note where the "LH IMPULSE" is on the flywheel relative to the mark on the transmission. Most likely it's below it. Assuming it is, loosen the mag and rotate it clockwise and repeat until it fires right at or just a tad after the mark on the transmission.

Problem is fixed,but I had to turn the mag CCW

I have a theory on this one as I have a "B" that will do this. I have checked and I know mine is not firing early. I have verified TDC on #1 by pulling the plug as well as using the 3:00 O:Clock mark behind the flywheel. In fact, to test this theory, I retarded the mag a LOT and it still exhibited this behavior. Here's what I think may be happening... I'm open to comments...

When #1 fires, I believe the RPM jumps up fast enough that it disengages the dogs in the mag and now when #2 fires, it fires 25 degrees before TDC and #2 may kick back. If I roll past #1 VERY slowly so that it is cranking on #2, I have NEVER had it kick back and often it will start.

Any comments or theories?
