John Deere classic green paint?

I'm redoing a '49 unstyled AR. I've been painting all the little parts with John Deere Classic green paint. I'm putting a new set of Detwiler repro fenders on it and also stripped the Detwiler hood that the previous owner put on it, specifically so the paint on the tin all matches. Took the 3 pcs to the painter yesterday to be painted. The painter says he used a standard John Deere enamel paint...NOT the classic. He and another painter swear up and down that the "classic" doesn't have all the "old good stuff" that the "turf and ag" paint has and say that the majority of the time, they see the "classic" turn blueish after a year or so. Anyone else see this? And, I have seen some paint jobs on JD's that have turned blue...pretty homely looking! Any thoughts?

Yes, I have seen it develop a blue tint, But I would be more concerned about the use of enamel. It is OK if you didn't put any time into the prep, but if you do, it is a shame to see it deteriorate after a few years, compared to how better paint holds up.

I've always used the Ag Green from my dealer with synthetic hardener and reducer from a auto parts store that supplies paint supplies. Never had any issues.

I used to use all classic but it seems in the last 10 years the bluer color has been classic and it doesn’t look or seem right to me I always thought the classic has more yellow and wasn’t as dark when I was a kid. I honestly don’t know which I’d pick there’s one of mine on the list to do next summer but it isn’t a favorite the local napa has a color code so I might give that a try

But as far as there isn’t the good stuff in it like there’s a different formula the two paints are completely identical besides tint.

Are you guys talking about Classic paint from Mother Deere herself? As in, bought from a dealer? That stuff is turning blue??

Yes at least I am I remember it being much yellower about 20 years ago

I'm getting ready to paint my '41 H and would like to get it "right" but this debate has been going on forever, not just this post. To me the Ag-Turf green seems a bit more yellow that the older stuff. I have FIL's '51 A with mostly original paint and it always seemed to have a bluish tint. How about the Majic and Rustoleum brands from TSC.

The color is prone to fade and since you mix blue and yellow to make green the more the yellow fades it leaves the blue pigment. If you can find a clear coat which is compatible that would help with the fading. It will just make touch up more difficult.

All I know is "classic green" for anything with a build date before 1988. I promise this is accurate, I was there. I did a repaint on my inherited R in 1990. The dealership, that I would eventually work for, showed me that Deere just changed the paint color, thus creating Ag and Turf.
I have no idea if current production classic green holds up like the older stuff did. I have a 430 garden tractor that i've done some repainting on from classic green rattle cans. It's too fresh to say if it'll fade to blue or not. I know it looks good and correct, to my eyes anyway, today.
