have a late model john deere b. clutch engages to fast while in reverse. seems to be ok in forward gears. have adjusted clutch per john deere specs several times with no change. I am missing something.

Is it jerky,chattery ?
If so deglaze the metal clutch surfaces so they aren't shiny anymore. I like to sand blast all the removable ones.
Also have the linkages free from slop and repack the pulley bearing,lube the toggles and make sure the adjusting bolts are clean and free to slide in their holes.

Reverse is equal to 3 rd gear if not 4th, so it takes off fast. Your locating pin for the operating sleeve may also be badly worn. Sloppy linkages also contribute. It is Normal to have to slip the clutch when using reverse.

And also keep in mind that the pulley bearing could be bad and the crankshaft where the bearing runs could also be bad,, as you back up the 'lurch' motion would be a bit heavy on the lever engagement.. it would tend to make you jerk it forward more..
