John Deere D Unstyled Questions

Looked at a D parked in the woods last week, and a couple of questions. The left rear wheel has a different cover then the right rear wheel. The left one does not have a bolt but the right one does. In the parts book it only shows the one that is on the right wheel. What's with the one on the left?

Then, the petcocks, this is a 1927 and I am building a lamp out of a 1928 D engine block, and want to find the correct petcocks for it - are these the correct type used for 1928 or when did they switch to the other style? Thanks.

Those are the correct petcocks, the axle nut in the top picture is correct, the bottom nut is a replacement used up until mid 1935. The original probably got lost in the field.

(quoted from post at 11:54:25 10/28/19) That style petcock was used until 1931.

Mark - thanks for the input. I suppose the Unstyled parts book was updated to reflect the later style cover used and doesn't show the earlier version maybe. I've never seen the earlier style so wondering. Thanks for petcock info as well, I will keep a watch for that style.

(quoted from post at 20:24:41 10/28/19) I would buy the block off this tractor if selling?!

Skip, this family that has the tractor buys new tractors but keeps the old ones, and never sell or trade them in. It isn't for sale but was fun to look at. This being a 27 it has the 6 1/2" pistons where the block I'm using for my lamp has the 6 3/4" pistons which do you need? As there are 3 blocks for the D I believe.

Interesting. I looked back from the sellers ad where I bought my block from and that was a 28 and had the cover with the bolt.

This 27 pictured had one of each.

There are a couple other D's here around the area but I haven't seen them, and I looked at a styled one on steel this summer but that doesn't have the covers just the flatter plain looking ones.

I was at Gathering of the Green when they had the Dain and early D's there, I will have to look back at pictures and see what they had! Thanks for the input.
