John-Deere Disc questions

I have the old J-D disc shown in pictures. I want to re-purpose the two disc gangs. I am looking for information or someone with a parts disc that would sell an end casting, (one is missing). Where is the best source to purchase new disc's from? What about the replacement bearings for this unit? Are they still available? Where? Take a look at the pictures and help me if you can.

Shoup is a good place to get blades. You will want to know the diameter you want, and the hole size/ shape. Sit down for the cost tho, and Shoup is pretty good prices.
Their web site can be a bit mysterious, get all your info and facts together and call for tge bearings and spools and such, thry may or may not have them but it’s worth a
call if you don’t see it on the web site. Same with the older bearings, thry night or might not have....

There is Agri Supply in the southern USA, they do pretty good parts too, thry ship, but I’m not so familiar with them as I’m in the north.

The end bracket is likely going to have to stumble across on an old parts yard or someone’s grove; you can check with Deere on their parts web site but if they have it it
will be more than a good used Whole disk just for that item....

Paul,
I looked at the Shoupe website and you are right...it is very elementary. But that's OK, I would sooner them have parts and not a pretty website anyway. They have a replacement for the end castings that are made of spring steel. That unit is supposed to keep the gang tight even after use, (good idea). I want to get one of the gangs tore down so I can tell what type of bearing is needed and if a current replacement is available.

If you decide to check JD for any parts I think parts cat 333 is the correct PC. Part # for spacer on nut end of disc shaft is Q8977K.

It appears Parts Depot has 4 of the spacers. It my understanding that one must utilize an equipment dealer that has an account with Parts Depot in order to purchase parts. Parts Depot info is shown in photo below.

That 'washer' is called "Duratite' gang washer. They work.I once put one on an older Oliver disk that simply would NOT stay tight. Tightened
it too much as it acctually turned the blade next to it inside out.Granted,it was a thin blade. Put a smaller blade next to it and didnt
tighten it quite so much.but the gang never got loose thereafter.

I like Shoups best. Agri Supply has parts for older smaller disks such as yours.AS will have the iron bearings for your disk. Shoup does not
carry those.

Hello Jim,
Thanks for your posting. I was surprised to learn that this disc was built in 1948. I think it had new disc's installed sometime in the past as they are only 16". Where this unit came from, the 16" disc was probably what they wanted due to a rocky condition of the soils, (and maybe cost of the disc's). In my area, and for my refit I plan to use 20" disc's. Does any of your information suggest what size disc was recommended when originally built? Do you have any good sources for affordable disc replacements?

Here is another question for this group of implement enthusiasts. Is it possible to replace the original iron bearing type with a more modern sealed bearing design? That bearing update is my preferred approach if feasible to do so. I have not taken one of the disc gangs apart to study and see what may or may not be possible yet. What is the thoughts of this group on using notched blades on the front, to cut the trash and solid disc's on the back gang?
Al

Changeing from the old iron bearings to newer greaseless/sealed bearings is usually not feasable.not inpossible, but it would take major reworking(welding/cutting) of the hangers, bearing holders, adding spacers to the gang bolt.Simply not practical.Notched blades tend to cut trash better, but are much more prone to breaking in rocks.

Hello Steve,
Fortunately, in my area we have no rocks at all. Even the well drillers like our area as my last well went down 450' and didn't hit one rock. I certainly understand your thoughts on retrofitting bearings in place of the original bushings. I will study that idea further when I get in to it and make a decision then.

Ditto what Steve stated. Changing from white iron brgs to antifriction brgs would require some very serious remodeling of the disk frame where brgs housing attach to gang frames, The iron brgs will last on a lot of acres if regularly greased.

Too much missing to make a disc out of that pos Piece of scrap. Look for a better, newer AW 14-18 footer.

Yup.... you are right, this old disc, as is, would be heading for scrap. However, I am re-purposing the two gangs for another use and they will work just fine for that even after hanging on new disc's and bearings. I would need more tractor than what I have in order to look for a 14' donor as you suggest. Thanks for your response...

Changing to the new style bearings can be don but is a big project--Here is how I did it to a old IH 37?? to make it a disc we mounted of 1 of our SS's.---Tee

Nice, Your bearing conversion idea is along the same lines I am thinking for the JD 1210 I have. What was your bearing? Source? Is your axle 1-1/8"
Thanks for posting...

I have studied further the old John-Deere 1210 offset disc shown above. I am once again rethinking making a modification that would replace the iron bearings with sealed bearings. It will take a bit of work but the end result, for my needs, would probably make a better conversion. Thanks to the help of those who have made suggestions and shared references. Shoup's is surely a good place to start looking for parts. Agri Supply in another good source. I will check with a couple of western Ag supply competitors to see if the same parts are available so I could pick up in person. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Agri-Supply is where I got the bearings and holders--If I remember right the arbors are 1-1/8--If I can be of help--don't be afraid to ask--Good Luck---Tee

Hello Tee, Your modification, shown above, has inspired me to make a bearing change to these old J-D disc gangs. I have completed some basic measuring and have determined that I need to add a piece of 1" mild steel spacer from which I can center and remount a 1/2" plate with a round hole plasma cut and drilled to allow mounting of the four bolt flanged sealed bearing, then weld to the 1" spacer. I will also need to weld in a 1" strong-back plate that allows for mounting/welding these disc gang assemblies into the new planned carrier framework. I have one bad 1-1/8" axle, (that I see is available new from Agri Supply). I think I can modify the existing iron bearing spacer castings to work properly with the new sealed bearings, (with a bit of lathe work). I think I will get the spacers cut and the bearing mounting plates plasma cut and drilled before I even start and have them fitted to the new sealed bearings. I need to do a cost study for new 20" disc's and determine where is the best place to purchase them. At the high current cost of equipment, I can invest some sweat equity, in this project, and end up with a bullet proof disc unit built specifically to my needs and design, (for less money while keeping my overhead down). If you or anyone else has additional suggestions, please share your thoughts.

Here is an update on my questions regarding the "re-purposing" of the gangs from my old John-Deere 1210 offset disc. I had some free time and after a more thorough investigation have concluded that my particular 1210 disc was equipped with "anti-friction ball bearings" from the factory. I see that it may be a bugger to remove the 1-1/8" square axle shaft from each section of the disc gang. I also purchased a John-Deere service manual, from an EBAY source, that has proved very helpful. I will take a couple of pictures from the manual and if anyone has suggestions for dismantling of the disc gangs please share.

Here is a picture of a page out of the factory John Deere Service manual for the 1210 disc. This cut shows the same bearing arrangement that I have on the topic disc of this discussion. Anyone know what the current interchage P/N would be for p/n item 15: AQ 28988 K

Here is a picture of a service manual page that shows the version with "white iron" bearings. I thought this is the type bearing that I had until further study. Literature is good!
