john deere G or GW

Assuming it has the two piece front pedistal the only way to be sure what it was built to be is to do the serial number check through the Two Cylinder magazine. I would say that if it presently has the wide front axle mounted on it, chances are it is a genuine GW, if it doesn't it probably isn't, but until you have the s/n checked I don't know of any other way to be sure. After about the middle of the 1950 models several regular G's came with the two piece pedistal, I've got a '51 G that came that way...also got a genuine '48 GW....I could swap the front ends and confuse the issue if I wanted to....but why? The last G built (s/n 64530) came that way...narrow front with a two piece pedistal. One advantage is that you could convert a two pedistal tractor to any front end configuration you wanted if you didn't like it the way you bought it.
