John Deere G

Im curr ently restoring a 1948 John Deere G. It runs well and I am planning on doing engine gaskets as well as rebuilding the positions and sleeves. For the othr misc parts am I better buying and using the paper gaskets or just using a tube of gasket maker? What are some other things I should plan on re-biulding? thanks

No sleeves in a G block. You have to either hone what you or have it bored. Head gasket and tappet cover should beregular ones. The one under the governor should be a factory one. All the others can be silicone. I prefer the Permatex black Right Stuff. works good and holds tight once cured. You should send the cam out to be reground. Makes a world of difference. We can do that here if you need someone.

If it runs well why are you pulling the pistons out? When you say rebuilding them do you mean new rings? Never heard of anyone rebuilding pistons. Either way lots of extra work and money you’ll be spending.

Depends on what your definition of rebuild is. Replace every single bearing, gasket, seal, ect?

For odd duck gaskets I use a roll of gasket paper from Steiner Tractor parts that's 1/32" thick by like 36" wide. Can't remember how long it was. It's wide enough to make a first reduction cover gasket on an Unstyled A, which is usually the biggest gasket on a two cylinder. If you're making gaskets because they're not available anymore I would recommend investing in a gasket punch set. If you don't you'll wish you did.

It does run well. Should I just re do all the engine and transmission gaskets all the way around and call it good?

If it's running good leave it be. If it's making strange noises by all means investigate, but why just replace gaskets. Any leaks? Check the fluids, replace them if needed.
There are some but my issue is that on my last restoration I didn't do anything and it started leaking after the old gadkets were getting used again
