John Deere H Fan Conversion Kit

I have a 1940 H that I am starting to restore. I am converting the fan shaft from the original rubber torsion style fan to the clutch style. Since my tractor is a hand start model, it did not have a generator pulley on it. One came with the kit. Which direction do I install the pulley. One side has splines in the center that slides over the fan shaft; the other side does not have splines. Do the splines face the fan (forward) or rear toward the governor?

Thank you.

The splined side should stick out farther and be machined smooth on the outside as well for the felt to seal against it as it goes down into the fanshaft housing against the bearing. Some of these pulleys have a little part of the splines at the beginning machined away for an o-ring to sit into the counter bore.

Mike:

It looks to me like the splined side; which has a bevel on the end; faces forward (toward the radiator) and the back side of the pulley (non splined) side goes into the fan shaft housing. Are we saying the same thing? Now that I understand that it fits into the fanshaft housing; it can only go on one way. Not sure how much of a seal this forms to keep grease from leaking.

When I took mine apart, the fan shaft housing had a lot of grease in it. Aside from packing the bearing, are you supposed to pack the housing full of grease too?

Thank you.

I think we are saying the same thing. I don't have one in front of me so I thought the splines went all the way through ? Sounds like they are only at the front side which is fairly flat but should have 3 or 4 little bumps where the large spring goes to help keep it in place. Pack the bearing. Then after it is all together I stick a grease fitting in where the pipe plug is on top front end of fan tube. I pump grease in there but try not to get so much it flys out.
