[bobs old iron]

put battery in my H when i conected the pos to ground i get sparks, is it possible that somthing was changed i didn't notice when battery was taken out, any idea why thanks

Look at the ends of the cables at the battery. The opening on one should be smaller than the other. If the cable with the smaller opening is connected to the frame you have a negative ground system.
I suspect this is how your H is now set up. When new it came from the factory as a positive ground system.

Maybe it had previously been connected wrong and the generator was polarized the other way. Does it have the cutout relay or has it been changed to a regulator? Could be the relay contacts are stuck.

it has the braided cable for ground,as said, i didn't knoticed if battery was changed when taken out, a friend took it out helping me to start other tractor.

Tapping may not work. Better to take the cover off.

was at a show, bunch of j-d owners checked it out, lucky for me taped on cut out and genny is working fine
