John Deere Head Gasket Installation

What is the correct way to install a head gasket on a john deere A ? Smooth side of the gasket against the block or smooth side against the head?

While we're on this subject, I'm going to be replacing one of these on an unstyled A sometime this winter. Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the nuts? Been quite a while since the last time I did one.

Looks like 150 for the head bolts on your A according to Mr. Thinker. Ron MN

There's a bulletin on that. Can't remember off the top of my head but I'm thinking 125 for regular studs and 150 for black studs. Not sure what the likelihood is of it having black studs. I think I'd stick with 125 because those blocks are well known for cracking
