John Deere Hy Gard fluid

What if any hydraulic fluid will interchange with J D Hy Gard? I'm working on a 80 model 2040 tractor and hate to spend what JD
wants for Hy Gard.

Look for a UTHF that is labelled as meeting John Deere J20C specification. Tractor Supply's Premium Universal Transmission Hydraulic Fluid, Mobil Delvac Tractor Hydraulic Fluid, O'Reilley's Premium Universal Tractor Fluid, Walmart's Super Tech Universal Hydraulic & Transmission are a few that advertise meeting J20C.

Mobil 424 and Chevron THF are both oils that meet or exceed Deere's requirements as well.

Our JD 4600 calls for low-vis Hy-Gard, and that's what I think I will use. My dad used to use a universal hydraulic oil and would occasionally blow the pump seal out of the reverser on his 350 crawler. I hate to think of how big a job it would be to change that seal on our 4600. We do occasionally use it in cold weather. I think the last time I changed it we ordered it online. I bought a 5-gallon pail of delvac hydraulic oil, but it's not low-vis, but I will use it in the front axle.
