John Deere LA Magneto.

Does a hot coil for the Wico X Magneto mean the standard Wico X Coil or is there an aftermarket Coil that is hotter? Just wondering as I am trying to correct some chronic Mag problems. Thanks to all who reply.

There are two coils available for the Wico X.
One is the standard, the "hot" one is referred to as heavy duty.

TSX, there are indeed choices available (for the X mags), the stock coil and the so called "hot coil" and myself (retired electrical engineer) and the late Duane Larson (nuclear physicist in his lifetime) discussed this in great detail when we gave technical seminars together. The thing is as we understood it, the hot coil was actually for the Wico XD mag which had a higher magnetic strength rotor (and will not fit in a Wico X) and indeed such a higher strength rotor could induce more energy into that larger coil. HOWEVER since the Wico X still has the regular (NOT a higher magnetic strength as an XHD) rotor its not possible to create more spark energy even though the so called hot coil is capable of such if a higher magnetic strength rotor were used.

HOWEVER if the so called "hot coil" is more efficient then the stock coil, sure its possible its use may yield slightly higher spark energy.

The bottom line in our collective opinions was use of the hot coil wouldnt hurt anything and could produce slightly more energy then the stock coil (it is indeed physically bigger) but dont expect any huge let alone measureable increase in performance or HP etc.

ALSO as it has more inductance be sure and use the slightly higher mfd rated condensor (I dont have the mfd values handy, seems like 0.025 to 0.035) because if you use a lower mfd condensor you might even get less spark energy (with hot coil and too low mfd condensor)

It wont hurt anything to use the hot coil so if it floats your boat go for it, but if a dyno showed any HP gains Id be surprised
