John Deere M All-Fuel

Hi all,

We currently own a 1949 John Deere M with the regular tank and an extra small fuel tank. When we found the tractor she was in a bad condition and we are currently restoring her. Is there anybody with pictures of the extra fuel tank, the three way valve and especially the controls from the dashboard as fitted on the all-fuel model M? We do have an extra control switch right above the serial tag, though it is not connected (probably broken or so).

Off course we want to figure out if our M is an all-fuel model, or whether it is modified by someone else. When looking in the parts book the parts seem to be the same, but pictures would be a great aid!

Thanks!

If my crs is correct the all fuels were all for the export market. Don't know if they had a USA plate identifying them of not. Hopefully someone can find a few pics to help you out.

The only thing that I have ever seen in the extra hole above the serail number plate is a push button that was used on the MI that had a the MI-7 highway mower installed on it. If the cutter bar caught anything it would pull a safety switch and kill the power to the ignition. You would then have to hold your finger on the button to start the tractor and back it up to allow the cutter bar to reset the safety switch.

Is there a set of shutters in front of the radiator? Is there a control arm above the starter knob to open and close the shutters?

What model carberator does it have on it?

There is no push button in the hole above the serial number plate, it is more like a left/right switch.

The shutter in front of the radiator is not the shutter set as in the parts manual, but a pull up cover, with indeed a handle above the starter knob.

We have the TSX-245 carb, but that is pretty the same as the 475 right?

I'd never heard of that safety switch button! Was it on all MIs or just the one's equipped with the MI-7? Is it listed in any of the parts books or documentation?

I think mine has it, and I always thought it was a farmer addon. Now I need to look again.

I have an original orange 420u with 47 sickle on it and it has a thing "switch" on the left side of mower frame that must cut the ignition, also a push button on the dash but it is seized up. Always wondered what in the world they where for, now I know.

I sent you an email, respond to it and I will send you the MI-7 manual.

I also have a large family of implements for my M and a few for the MT

What is the part number on the intake manifold and the part number on the head ? It should have a T handle to the right of the steering wheel to run the shutters. Does it have a drain plug on the side of the oil pan ?

Can't help with most of the questions but I can a bit more on the shutters. The M series should have louvered metal shutters, not the curtain, so that is not original. there is a gentleman who advertises in Green Magazine I believe who sells reporduction ones. I got a set for my MT a few years ago, about $400 with shipping, for winter snow plowing.

Here's a pre production all-fuel. You had to open the little door to get to the starting tank, which you can see. Later models had a more traditional fill cap. This tractor also has a mag.
No idea how many were built, but most were probably exported with a few sent to the southeastern US.

I have a exported M all-fuel. It had been shipped back to the states. It is dismantled for restoration at this time. I will take a photo of the dash for you. If your M is a "49" it will not check out with Two Cylinder archives.

A picture of the dash would be great! It's starting to look like we have a 'farmer built' JD M, since our cilinder head has the parts number of the gasoline version.
Thanks so far!
