John Deere M Gauge?

I just got this parts tractor. It’s a 1949 M. I have a 48 & 51 M. I’ve never seen this gauge on an M. Any idea if it was an option.

That's a new one on me. I've never seen that before. I grew up on an MT, and that never had one. Presumably it was an option?
I would say your “option” idea is probably 99% correct. No idea for certain, but the parts diagram I attached shows a bracket it would mount in, unless that was only a support bracket that went behind the hood. My point is that someone may have drilled this hole and mounted it there, but Deere may have intended it to mount elsewhere.

It’s an hr meter that was mounted on any tractor. I have that hr meter on a Massey Harris and a case tractor.

There should be an oil pressure switch near the oil pressure sender that only allows the meter to run when the engine s running.
