John Deere M puller

Does anybody pull a M? We have a 51 we've just started pulling with, in the 2500# class. If you have one where do you add weight, I'd like to figure out a way to hang some suitcase weights in the center hook mounts since it seems plenty light on the front as it is. Does anybody make pistons for these, or what are some suggestions for engine work?
thanks

I don't know about bigger pistons made specifically for an M, but if you were to bore it I am sure you could find some pistons to fit...I know a guy who pulls one and I don't know exactly what he has done: 38" tires, custom fuel tank out front, side shields soit's really no more an M than my 70 is...that modified and you are into non stock classes anyway.
Problem is in stock classes, as you add weight and get to #3000 and #3500 you run into Cs, Super Cs and Super 66s...and that's a loosing battle

I love my Johnnys, and in most work situations (except backing wagons, they are my choice, but I have had slmost no luck in Div. I type stock pulls with the B, or A, and the 70 is stricyly a 1 weight class tractor, so at pulls you'll usually find me on the Super C, or Super H. Workin on a 420 so maybe!

I have a 40 T puller and do pretty good. I started off with a worn out 40 motor, smoked like a freight train. ive pulled against a Framall super C and beat him by 20 feet. I have 9 bold 12x28 rims with 14.9x28 top cut safemark tires. they say that firestone field and roads are the best but i might have to disagree. Since I have cut tires I have had to hag all my weight up front. I have two weight brackets on my tractor. One on front 3 feet from the nose cone the other sitting on top the transmission, I removed the complete hydraulic system. i removed the factor draw bar and made my own. i recently bought a 420 motor and put in my tractor and have done better so far. I am competative with other stock tractors. I love to pull my 40 and wish there were light tractor classes closer to home (Corinth, Ky) so i could pull more. I pull in 3000# - 3500# classes. This past weekend i showed up late to a pull and had to pull in the 3750# class. I came in last but was two feet behind a tractor with twice the power and cubic inches. There was only 5 tractors in that class. Hope this helps. If you want pictures of my weight bracket an hitch i would be glad to email them to you.

a guy where we pull has one that is pretty strong i think he pulls up to 4500 i have heard it has crawler gears in it but its just heresay give me your email and ill send u a pic

I have also wanted to build a 420 430 to pull the problem is 2 cly and just 100 or so cu in. A WC WD Allis is twice as big stock. So you can bore and stroke a Allis to 430 cu in. so you should be able to make a little JD to 215 or so. ML Pankey says his Allis has 160 hp so your JD should have 80, which is enough to be competitive in the 3 and 4 mph class. I pull a 435 which just has about that much hp. and every once in a while I slip up on somebody.

I have 4 1/8 inch high compression pistons. I had them special built by Aries Pistons. There are only 4 like them in the world and I am running two of them in my MT. Other 2 are for sale You can contact me at 870-994-2288 or 870-897-4765 (cell). Will try to add a picture of them.

a high compression m motor will work fine, just dont stand next to it when it pitches a rod or crank from having no center main..

I have been pulling a 49 M since I was 7, and I"m almost 18 now. You can make it pull good, but it takes a good bit of work. As far as the engine goes, there"s only a certain amount of power that can be made from a 101 ci 2 cylinder. Mine has a custom set of pop up pistons in it, that realy helped, along with dual exhaust. The main problem with pulling and M is they are short, and underpowered compared to the allis chamblers. The email is open, would be glad to talk with you.

O, and don"t worry bout the engine, or pitching a rod, I turn mine all the carb will let it turn, and its been together for 9 years.
