John Deere M Radiator

I just bought new mounts for my JD radiator. They have to be riveted in. I was wondering if anyone has replaced these before and what is the best way to rivet them in? Is there a tool that will help? Thanks, Bob

Bob,

There are rivet runs and have tools. Go to a reputable tool store and bring in your mounts and tell them they will be installed in a radiator. If this is the only time you will use a rivet gun/tool, call around and see if you have a neighbor or business that will do it for you...probably a lot more cost-effectice - just make sure they have done it plenty of times before - good luck - tstex

Take a look at the rivets that are in there now. I bet they are just flattened enough to tighten them up after they were put in the holes.

I just stuck the new rivets in, put a bumper on the round head and took a 1/2 pound hammer and tapped the end until it flattened down and swelled out the rivet enough to get a good tight fit.

I hold the new rubber mount tight to the steel frame wiht Vice-Grips. Then hold the "assembly" down on a solid piece (vice - anvil) and pound the rivet enough to hold it in place. When you have all four in place, then set the heads with the ball of a ball pein hammer, and you're done. Easier to do, than to explain.

Don't take them all apart first - leave one in it's original condition so you have a pattern for the new ones. there are 4 ways they can be put together, and only one is correct.

Hey, Bob -- Can I ask where you got the rubber mounts? I've pulled my radiator to replace the belts, and two of my four are shot, so I might as well replace them "as long as I'm in there."

49MT - JD still has the radiator mounts - comes with the mount and 4 rivits. $15.89 each. Also www.external_link.com has them for 6.99 but currently out of stock. Also try Dave Kempisty at www.northottotractorparts.com/ (email - [email protected]) , he can probably get them and he is wonderful to deal with. He was very helpful during my M restoration.
