John Deere manure spreader

I have this old spreader that’s in the way in my barn and I was wondering if it’s worth anything or if anyone would even want it or if I should just junk it. Pretty sure the chain and most of the beaters are gone but I didn’t know if it was a rarity or anything
Thanks Haykid

You'd be surprised at how many people buy this old stuff, sit it in their yard and plant it full of flowers. Craigs List?

Looks pretty good from the photo . We need one on the farm , I’m probably four hours away .
Don’t junk it , imo, the prices they ask on Craigslist are very expensive way to much imo good luck

Lots of good parts there that you can not buy anymore OR are very expensive new. I have sold spreaders for as much as $2,000. In the 70's and 80's at the Sisters OR or Eugene OR Horse Sale or advertised in the Small Farmers Journal. JD made great spreaders and well liked brand. A lot of them still out there....James

It definitely has value beyond scrap or yard art. Around here some fancy horse operation would like something like that.

Please don't junk it. You would be surprised at the number of people out there that are looking for parts from these old spreaders or taking an old spreader like this and rebuilding it. At a minimum that spreader is worth $600 as is. There are Facebook pages dedicated to these old spreaders and someone would be mighty happy to find a unit like yours if for only the parts.

I’m all for keeping old iron around I just didn’t know if this had any parts worth saving or anything so I figured I’d check on here first. Now with the wealth of knowledge from all you guys it will definitely not be getting junked

Back in the late 90's I rebuilt one of those with rough cut locust boards. Looked nice with the yellow wood. What does the control handles look like? Also. Does it have paddles or a auger for the beater? Ours had a auger and control handles that moved in an arc sideways. Would love to have another one.

Funny it's usually the other way around. People will think a crumpled up pile of rusty scrap metal is worth a mint because it's old.
At the very least that is worth $300-$400 as a firewood trailer. If the apron and beater drives work, you could probably ask $1000 as it sits and get $600-800 without too much trouble. An entire brand new apron chain is $650 from farmchains.com. If all the beater needs is paddles, those can be cut on a plasma table pretty easily if you have one to use as a pattern. If it's one of those with the pins, it can be fabricated.

I’m not sure of what beater was on it as far as I can tell everything but the very top little beater is completely gone. The handles look like they move in an arc sideways but I don’t have any handles anymore so I’m wondering if someone gutted all the drive parts and just used it as a fire wood hauler

That could very well be the case. Depends on how much you want to put into it to get it working again.

Or vegetables.... My gardens are: a steel wheeled wagon, a steel wheeled manure spreader, and a clawfoot cast iron bathtub. 😁

My cousin has a very old spreader that still works. He uses it very gently spreading cow manure on his pumpkin fields each spring. It resides in a shed when unused. Each fall he sells pumpkins as a u-pick operation, you'd be surprised at how city folks flock in each fall to choose their "perfect pumpkin" for Halloween.

We had one like it. Not a dairy farm with daily use, so those horizontal control levers were always rusted stuck when we wanted to use it. Probably a big reason why yours seem to be missing.

Not at all rare. Not worth the cost to find/install beater(s) and apron. Very possibly other parts missing/broken and NLA. Suggest you advertise it as a heavy-duty trailer with photos of the tires and bed- the one in your photo looks pretty good.

It's been proven time and time again, if you package manure properly you can sell it for an outrageous price. City slickers can't get enough of it for their little plot gardens. It's truly amazing what some people will pay for "crap".😄
