John Deere model 50 PowerTrol system question

My reproduction service manual recommends engine oil for the PowerTrol system in my JD 50. It reccomends SAE 10W in the Power Shaft system. Is this correct? The hydraulic cylinders for the front end loader get their oil from the PowerTrol pump and it just seems like they would require either SAE 10W or JD Hy-Gard rather than engine oil. Thanks in advance. Don.

Power shaft system (your terms) and powrtrol system are two separate systems and oil type specified in you manual are correct. SAE 10W is recommended for the PTO because of the clutch pack used in the live PTO. The lighter weight oil will work in the powrtrol system as well as the commonly used John Deere hydraulic product Hygard is SAE 10W oil. Keep in mind your 1950's era 50 tractor manual will not mention a current day product like Hygard as well as any of the other modern day multi-weight oils.

Most people use HyGard in the Powertrol hydraulic system now as not to contaminate other tractor hydraulic systems that might use the same hydraulic cylinder on a implement..

It's correct. Dan in Ohio is also correct. I use 10W-30 in hydraulic system and in the
engine crankcase of my 50 and all works good.
