John Deere model 50

I'm looking to purchase a 50 it is early with the window wheels and it has a non convertable front end on it. The tractor also has a wico model xb distributer. My question is does anyone else have an early configuration such as this

I have an early 50, but I'm not sure of the distributer model. I can go check, if it will help you somehow.

This is my new '53, are these the wheels you speak of?

Not sure if these options make em anymore collectable, these
early numbered series sure seem to fit my budget better than
most other two cylinders tho!

What's the serial number on the tractor?

In the book I have from the Green Magazine on the early numbered series it talks of all the changes and serial number breaks. Some of the earlier ones were different with changes made after production I remember.

you have the same front end but you have a delco distributer and yes green magazine July 2012 features the 50 and states all but doesn't state if the options are few and far between or very common

Mine is 5011977, I have about 15 years of green magazines I
bought for a buck at a sale a few years ago, I'll dig out that
issue!

I'm sure not as many around just because it's
a earlier model. The changes & Upgrades J/D
made were improvements. I've own'd 2 model 50's
on early style with single induction carb like
a Model B & solid frt end. The other was much
later 1955. I really didn't care for either,
but I would perfer the later model myself....

I bought dad's (in 2005) John Deere model 50 he purchased new in February of 1953. It has the non convertible front just like the one pictured. Dad's came with a mag and he changed it to the distributor when I was very young. I'm out of state so I can't check the distributor, but it looks like one in picture. This is my favorite tractor because it was the one I learned to drive first and the one I spent the most hours. Here is a picture and it doesn't have power steering. I believe my brother put this decal on many years ago. Richard

Worked for Deerewhen the 50 came out.The XB Wico
looks just like a Wico X magneto, but has a wire
coming into it for 12 volt power. The majority of
the XB distributors on the tractors sold at the
dealership wore out the brass post the points were
on and you could no get an accurate adjustment.

Educate me, what is a non convertible front end?

Here is my 50, my grandfathers before me. The tractor I learned to drive and I remember the first time I raked hay with it. Roll o matic front with a delco distributor.

Kerry - some had a two piece pedestal - the lower portion could be removed, and replaced with a wide front without having to change the upper portion.

I have a 70 too, mine is a gas tho. Both my 70 and 50 are
1953. I don't have a picture of the two of them together, I
could probably Change that today tho.

Information received from an old friend master John Deere mechanic now deceased was when John Deere changed to the new model number series they may sure they used up as many B parts in the assembly line. This way the used up the old X distributors, front end parts etc. Naturally they changed the sheet metal but the first 50's were a combo of the old B and new 50. Now liability and product legalities would not permit this as much. The rear open designed centers were not feasible as many stress cracked and they went back to the reliable B center with the improved adjustment method.

ok Paul, I believe mine is a non convertible, one piece pedestal then. Will look later but almost positive it is.
Thanks for the response.

the picture above is a delco distributer and the other is the non convertable front end like someone else said the wico looks like a mag from the sounds of it this set up is rather common
