John Deere Model 60

I have a John Deere Model 60 and when it runs the engine has a knock deep inside the body of the tractor. Opened it up valve cover the push rod was off. Put rod back on arm and screw noticed had no threads to put locking nut on. It seems as if push rod is now to short?? I started with push rod on but still has knocking noise like crazy. HELP what can I do to get this fixed?

If it is needing that much adjustment, the camshaft, follower, or both could be wiped.

Ok what does that mean about damage to engine and how can I fix it? Which side of engine do I open, top, left, right, or all of them?

With your valve cover off, rotate the engine and see if the valve that is out of adjustment lifts as far as the others. If it doesn't, the lobe is worn off the cam and will need to be reground/replaced. A knock deep in the engine though is probably a bearing somewhere though.

Camshaft bearing could be out, also a loose flywheel sounds like that but wouldn't affect pushrods.

Deep knock could be a loose flywheel.

There is also bolts behind the pulley which hold the crankshaft in as a possible problem, normally they would be restrained by safety wire but that wire could have been taken out during a previous rebuild and not replaced, if that happened it's possible one of the bolts could have vibrated out causing the crankshaft to become loose and make the noise. (If that happened pray that the bolt didn't fall into the gears.)

The cam is buried deep and everything has to be removed to access it .
Do not waste your time with a used cam , as is . It must be reground along with the cam followers .
The same cam was used in the A .
The O’rings between the main bearing housings and block tend to squirm and cover the oil holes . Use a 1/8” all thread from the table lamp repair section of a hardware store. Inserted into the block to hold the O’ring in place .
Any oil pressure ?
