Was wondering if there is anyway to change the filter element out of the canister? I am restoring my 44 A and it looks to be full of mud dobbers and debris.

Does your '44 have the bail like this '39?

If so, there should be a baffle above the oil cup, and I believe the screen/strainer above that should just pull down and out.

You can get them pretty clean by unbolting them from the top casting and using degreaser and a hot
water pressure washer. Trying to remove that screen mesh will likely end up ruining it.

That screen will not come out without ruining it. Just use lots of water
under pressure. Both directions.

I cleaned mine by pouring full strength PurplePower through it. Flush it good with HOT water and let it stand a few days in the sun to dry. Just
keep the PP off the paint.
