John Deere model A puller

I recently purchased a 48 John Deere A. I'm looking to start pulling at fairs and small pulls close but I'm wondering what I can do to be competitive without getting to much into the pocketbook.

I had an A and now have a B. Getting things set up
right will help you most without spending anything at
all. Drawbar as far in and as high as rules allow.
Find some angle iron and make your own weight
brackets. I found kubota suitcase weights to be a
pretty good bang for the buck compared to ih. Does
it have cast center wheels? If it does get rid of them
and get 9 bolts ASAP. Wheels will be money well
spent. I'm almost 300 lbs and I was getting my A in
5000. Shedding any weight you can is much
cheaper than adding hp. Stick to farm class and
have fun.

Good points from Bill. You also won't have to spend much money getting it at least back close to factory advertised HP. Start with timing the mag correctly, new spark path through plugs , make governor adjustments as needed , either rebuild the carb or send it out. It should have a # 71 carb...make sure it does. A lot can and sometimes does happen through a 68 year life span and don't assume any of it was correct. Do what Bill said below, and get the power it should have and practice and in farm stock it's hard to beat a late "A".

Probably the most cost-effective direction to go for more Grunt will be to get a Stroked Crankshaft..as much as you can find or afford..

Some become available as others go to Longer Strokes..

Ask around...

Ron..

Before you go to steel center wheels check rules at the pulls your going to . In this area farm stock and local classes can't use pressed steel wheels so check before you put out the money for pressed steel wheels. Also check to see what they will and will not let you remove from tractor.
