John Deere Model M Voltage Problems

Hi Everyone

I have a 1950 Model M. It is charging negative. I replaced the wiring harness, got a new cut-out relay, and got the generator rebuilt. Got it all put back on and it charged correctly for about 2 hours. It showed positive 8 on high charge and about 2 on low charge. Came back 3 days later and cracked the tractor and it showed 0 on the amp gauge. When you turn the head lights on you the gauge reads -8. Any ideas on what I need to do to fix the problem?

John T's write up is very good so if you follow that you should be all set. Just a thought on the gauge, is that also new? I bought a cheaper volt gauge because the one I had didn't work. The new one does not seem very accurate at all. The only time the needle really moves is into negative when starting and when I turn on the lights it jumps up on the positive side. I get little reaction from normal or high charge. Maybe a loose connection as well between genny and gauge?

Yes the gauge is new from the John Deere dealer. What is really funny is it all worked correctly the first time I ran it.
