John Deere reduction gear swap.

Has anyone swapped the 1st reduction gear on a JD G with one from a 70 diesel? I heard years ago that this would slow the ground speed down closer to the "creeper" gear in the late A tractors. My problem is, the 70 D reduction gear has a 14 1/2" diameter, and won't quite fit under the reduction gear cover. Can the cover be milled out to fit? Or will I have to get the gear teeth cut down 1/8 or so? I am stuck.

Won't make a 2-1/2 mph tractor into a 1-1/2mph tractor. The speed reduction is only 7/8.
Cheaper to make more power with the G engine and use stock gears.
A Murphy 7" block, high compression pistons,Berry Cam and some port cleanup will cost less $$$.
