John Deere Running Gear- Wagon

Ok, since the Running Gear is John Deere, hoping some of you might have suggestions, Had posed the question in the implement section, & got some responses, but not having a lot of luck. Anyway, looking for a 15 rim, 6 lug, think it's a 4 1/2 center hole, & lug spacing is 6 1/2, believe they're considered 4 spoke to the rim. Called the local JD dealer, used to sell farm equipment years ago, now mostly Gators, Compact tractors/ lawn tractors now, Called the parts counter & asked about a replacement rim, he must have been the pencil/ button pusher type, 1st question, What model is the running gear ?, I said no idea, where might I find a model # ?, His response was, No idea ! Sure miss the old experienced guys at parts counter. Now I don't expect part guys to know everything, but at least have a little knowledge of parts ! So, anyone know where I might find a rim, or where there might be a model number on the frame ?, or would a GM rim from maybe a 3/4 Ton pick up be the same ? Thanks, Alan

Go to jdparts.com and type in wagon, all sorts of wagons come up just start looking through them. Maybe start with 853 and 963.

Some had metal tags riveted on, some were just stickers. The ones I have are on the rear side of the front axle or a diagonal brace.

See it you can find the letters and numbers cast into the hubs. You can try doing a search using the part number search, instead of the model search, on the JD online parts catalog search page. That will tell you the models that hub was used on and the rims are often on the same page as the hubs in the parts catalogs.

Coonie Minnie, I'll get a photo or 2 posted, see most new replacement rims have the 4 square hole in the spoke area, ( kinda reminds me of a lawn tractor rim where you mounted wheel weights ) mine do not, sorta like to match the other 3

coonie minnie, Here's some photos of the rim, 1st one is one already re-done, the measurements to the center flange both front & back are from the outer most edge of the rim. Hope this helps to see what I'm trying & want to match ? Thanks, Alan

Should be 953 not 853. And parts book should bring up your information.

Only 15'' diameter rim I see for model 953 wagon is part # JD1085 943 wagon shows part # JD 680 for 15'' wheel. If visible what is casting # on hub? What is rim width where tire seats?

Maybe it's just the camera angle, but that looks like a 6'' bolt circle and 4.62'' pilot hole to me. Pretty common ag rim size if it is. See this link. I have food luck with these guys, but I'm also in Canada so shipping from them is cheap. If you're in the US, any decent tire shop should be able to get in identical rims.

I saw your pictures BUT the pictures don't reveal hub casting # if # is displayed on hub.

Agreed on the hub numbers, I suggested that the day he first posted about this.

It would help to have the rim width as well if checking for used or aftermarket. I see he would like to match the originals which do not have the square holes for weight mounting. That might be a hard find as most rims have the holes standard now as they fit multiple applications.

Jim, just put the wheel back on, but can remove easy enough, where exactly would hub casting # be ? , on the flange face or backside, edge of hub, or snout of the hub if you might know ? Raining at the moment here, so will have to wait for a bit. Thanks, Alan

Usually on the backside flange area on the ones I've looked at.

Tx Jim & Jim ME, Was able to get the number on the back side of the hub, # S 3289 D, the rim is 5 wide where the tire bead seats. So what are my chances of finding a good used or even a new rim that matches mine ? Really don't like the ones with the extra square holes if I can help it ! Thanks, Alan

Tx Jim can check me on this. It looks like the 953 wagon gear used the S3289D hub. The 15 x 5 wheel (rim) option for that hub was the JD 1085, which was one Tx Jim mentioned before.

As to whether or not you will find one without the square holes in it, will only be known when you check with the places selling them. If you can't find any without the holes, cut some slug pieces to fit in the holes, weld them in, grind smooth and paint before mounting the tire. JMHO

Hub marked S3289D was used through 1964. Correct 15''X5'' wheel according to parts catalog should be JD1085. I performed a search & no JD1085 rims are shown available @ Depotparts.com

Tx Jim, Yeah saw that, but the hub is listed on the 963 wagon gear also, but list the wheel/rim as JD 639, but don't believe that's available either, wondering about John Deere salvage yards ? Also wondering if a GM/ GMC truck rim 6 lug 15 rim might work ? Also wondering about where /how the off-set is measured ?, even if it's a new implement wheel ? Thanks, AL

JD 639 is a 16 x 5.5 wheel according to the 963 parts list. You are looking for 15 x 5 right? I know the bolt pattern is the same for some 14", 15", and 16" x multiple widths as we have some and have stuck any one on in place of another to get something moved if we have a flat tire at a bad time.

Some pickup rims may fit, many are likely to be 6" plus wide. The bolt pattern may be ok, but you may need to cut the center hole bigger to use it. The offset would be the other thing. Likely easier, better and safer to weld filler slugs in the square holes of a new implement rim.
