I ran across a picture where a guy had adapted a side console to his 1868 4020. This must have been over 20 years ago. I couldn't find a name with the picture. Has anyone here ever heard of this being done on a 4020 prior to 1969? I want to determine if this can be done to my 1964 4020 diesel.

I've heard of it being done but authentic side console components for a 4020 are very scarce. If you do not care about originality 30 and 40 series components could be used. My understanding is the modification is very simple but its been a very long time since I have seen pictures and those were not great on details to make the change.

I'm thinking rockshaft housing will have to change unless you are willing to make a fair amount of plumbing for the new system.

I've been thinking as to cost in terms of using JD parts as much as possible. Would not surprise me to see cost in excess of 3,000 dollars. Remote SCV/ coupler bodies will price over 1,000 dollars each. A parts yard should know as to cross fit options from later series tractors. If you go the homemade route and not concerned about original looking pieces the price would come down considerably and have seen tractors with a double spool valve bolted to the right fender and hoses with Pioneer coupler bodies attached. I question the value of doing a change unless the OP just wants a project or conversation piece.

Likewise, the first loader on the home farm was on a WD45. One could be operating the hand clutch with one hand and the loader with the other. I find this business of having to do everything with the right hand annoying. Often doing farm work at tractor speeds you don't have to have a hand on the steering wheel every minute, allowing for the possibilities above.

I have used the 4010 which has been here since new to do field work starting when I was 12 during the mid-1970's. I got along with the forward controls quite well including using a semi-mount plow. I got compliments from neighbors on the quality work I did. I also do not like all the controls weighted to one side. I like the 986 tractor I have in part due to the controls somewhat split between the LH and RH sides. I know that does not work for a fair number of people.
