john deere transmission

Ive got a 39 john deere B that im rebuilding the transmission in and could use a little help! according to sources it should be a 4 speed but im only counting 3! if I try to put it in what I think is 3rd, nothing happens at the rear but if I flip the hi/lo lever to hi, it kicks the shifter out of 3rd and everthing starts turning at the rear. I put it back like the I.T. manual showed but im not to sure how this thing supposed to work! Have I done something wrong? PLEASE HELP!

It sounds like you are actually in reverse when you are thinking you are going to third. The hi-lo works with the two speeds to give you lo;1-2 hi;3-4. Reverse is kicked out when you attempt to enter hi range, they wouldn't allow reverse to run in hi. If this isn't how it is working then you do have something crossed up.

Jeremy, it sounds like you have the same tranny as my 40 B. If you are moving the shifter on the left to the left, that is reverse. I think you only have reverse in low on the shifter on the right and if you go to reverse with the right lever in high, it kicks out to neutral.

Jeremy,

Here is a drawing of the JD 4 speed transmission. It is for the unstyled, but yours should be the same as this. The descriptions of the different gears, should help you out.
