John Deere Unstyled AR governor problems

Friend's unstyled AR tractor - governor bearing on drive end fell apart -broke the gear -I rebuilt it with parts from that governor that were still ok plus parts from a 60 that were the same part number - the weights pivots holes were not worn near as much from the 60-now when running the tractor, it operates good until he goes up a hill -the governor does not open up the throttle -is it possible something is binding on the governor shaft? he had timed the mag drive hub so that it was horizontal when #1 was at TDC.

Remember, that the governor works to CLOSE the carburetor butterfly, not open it. That's why it is called a governor, and not a speed-it-upper.

The throttle leaf spring on the governor shaft at the aft end is pulling the speed control rod to open the carburetor butterfly, and the governor is pushing to close it. When the engine speed falls, the governor does not exert as much force to counteract the spring, so the engine gets more fuel, and it speeds up. This throws the weights out, the governor now pushes the rod towards the carburetor, counter acting the throttle spring strength, until both the leaf spring tension and the governor centrifugal force from the weights, come into equilibrium, and the engine runs at the one, set throttle position and speed.

So here's is what I always do first. Unhook the rod at the carburetor, check that it is one-half hole short at WOT throttle position, butterfly held WOT as well. Verify that the cotter pin is not hanging up at the carb, which they certainly can do. Then test run the engine, rod unhooked, and note that when your left hand opens the throttle plate, the governor should be pushing the rod in your right hand toward the carburetor, trying to slow the engine down. Always verify that rod action first.

Thanks FIT for clarifying -I was thinking about it backwards - it has a WICO X mag - would it be possible he is one turn out on the mag -since they do fire every revolution- even on exhaust? He says it starts fine -electric start model
I am going to see the AR on the weekend -he is about 60 miles from here - I have not seen how he reconnected everything once he got the governor back from me.

Sounds like the mag is correct if it starts fine. You can only be a half turn off, then you have to move it, or swap the plug wires. I'm betting on the length of the speed control rod being off.
