what deere tractors came with a V8, i thought i read someplace that there was only one and it waas a 4x4, anyone know?

Check out a Deere V8 before you buy it. It was a good engine but has been out of production for several years, service crankshafts for example are no longer avail.

I'm not looking to buy one, grandpa and I were talking about Deere V8s earlier today, I was sure I read someplace that the only one they made was in a 4x4 but grandpa thought there was an older two wheel drive that they stuck one in. Just wondering is all, we are not in the market for one

No the 8850 was the only one, and it didn't do so well. I was on a Deere tour when the were building these engines. We were at the then new engine plant, and there were a couple of them running on dynos in the test room, they were sure impressive then...I think that was in 1977...I think they used that engine in some construction equipment too...

Yes I agree with you B&D, there was only one in our area and I never worked on it, in fact it was in the mix with that "New" 4960 that I showed the pics of that had sat in the weeds since new, the guy that bought the 8850 was running it on a big scraper pan, I stopped and watched run for a bit on a job last Fall, It did sound good working that day, and the pan was giving it a work-out...But the previous owner had the heads off several times, I guess that was a weak area on them...

The 8850 was the only farm tractor that had a V8 from John Deere. We have had a lot of experience with them as there are two of them in neighbors tool shed. Great tractors but needed custom head gaskets designed for them. These two are turned up to over 450 hp and not a problem since the new gaskets. Will give the new 9430 a real run for her money when it comes to power. We won't talk about fuel economy though. They are a touch thirsty.

I wonder how they came up with a "custom" design for them??Just curious..I know a guy near me that makes head gaskets from solid copper, he does a near perfect job making them for pullers. I tried one on a 8640 we had, thought it was the answer, but it would still "sneeze" out the back on a hard pull, I felt that they did not crush well enough,,but they sure were pretty...

Several ended up with a Kinze repower and I know of two that are still in use with zero problems.I think they were stronger and are a real beast.Jon K. is one of the smartest minds in tractor history and could have saved JD millions if they could or would have hired him.

there was a Co in NEB that used the deere v8 on a tube grinder it was set up to 500hp the main brgs were held in the block with a type of bridge casting all one peace the pan bolts went in thru it and in to the block. know a guy in Aust. that has two of them he says deere put a kit on the air cleaner that stopped a lot of problems

I toured the engine factory at Waterloo in the early 90's and the V8 engine was still on the production line at that time, well after the 8850 was discontinued. They told us there was still an industrial demand for them. Mike

Deer put the V8 in an excavator, They were very thirsty and one of two that I know of had the block split through the main bearing bosses

Was the head O'ringed to work with the copper gasket?
