John Deere VB FB grain drill transporting question

I purchased this grain drill from a good friend of mine. It has not been
used in 3-4 years. I have about a 3 mile trip to get it home. I have
read where some people will take the bolts out of the hub to
disengage the chain when transporting. While searching here I
thought I found a thread where someone posted a diagram of the
assembly showing which bolts to remove. I can not find it now. Does
anyone have any advice?

Also, does anyone have an idea of what year this grain drill is?

Everything is pretty rusty except the seed box. It is in good shape,
but the fertilizer box is pretty rusty.

Welcome to YT
Model FB was manufactured from '46-'50. I'll advise to put a timing mark on hub & drive sprocket because bolt holes will only line up in one position of those parts. 3/4'' wrench is required to remove 3 bolts(item 28) on each side.

(quoted from post at 11:34:23 07/14/21) I'd try and find the coupler links and just take the chains off.

From my memory R&R of the shield to have access to reinstall the chain isn't a very easy task especially without removing tire/wheel. IMHO R&R of the 6 bolts is much, much easier than R&R of the chains. Chains come off a lot easier than installation similar to most things repaired.

Towed mine home behind the truck at 25mph for almost 20 miles . All I did was check the tire pressure and oil/grease all moving parts .

Thanks for the tips everyone. I was able to get the drill home safely.

Does anyone know where/if parts can be purchased for the drill? There are a few small things here and there that are missing. There are a few pieces missing where the seed comes out of the hopper before it
goes down the seed tube. Its a flat rectangular metal piece. I assume it controls the flow of seed.

I thought I read where AgriSupply carried parts, but I do not see anywhere on their website.

Thanks

Here is a link to the free online parts book at the JD web site . There are several FB versions listed .
