I recently putchased a 494 A to use in planting a vegetable farm it came with lots of seed plates but i dont know what they are for how can i figure that out i would mostly need one for sweet corn and pumpkins but if i could use more for other vegtables that would be great. Also dors anyone know where i could get parts for it if there are any companies who make reproduction parts for them? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Go to the site linked below, click on "Catalog Number Search", then look at catalogs 268 and 541.

Likely, some parts are still available through the local dealership.

I don't know where you are located, but I have a complete planter for parts that I would sell for $150. Central Illinois

I get my John Deere planter plates from Lincoln Ag Products. The have the guide lines for how to size your plates correctly and you can get any size from them. You can send them a seed sample for sizing as
well.

The John Deere plate book lists the cell sizes in I forget 1/32" or 1/64" I depth, width and length and it tells you the different floor plates to use with each seed plate for the seed you are using. The Plastic plates not sure if they list cell sizes or just what they are for and doesn't tell you how to turn the floor plate for flat side, wide grove or narrow grove or what filler plate to use with thin seed plates. I need to dig out by seed plate book to check cell sizes on some plates now As that is the way some seeds are listed for size. And the seed cutof wheel and knockers are same as the latest 7000 series that was avaible as plate planters. Don't know if after 7000 series they made a plate planter or not but floor plates also fit all models from 290 up to 7000 series. Not sure if the floor plate is same on the horse planters or not but think it is. About all the parts you should be needing. The JD plate book lists plates from 4 cells to 64 cells. The 494A planter is the same as the 12XX series plate planters. My 494A had the speed setup of several sprockets to change the chain to get the seed spacing. I did not like that and could not get seed spacing I wanted so I changed it over to the gearbox setup from a 494 and that gear box never heard of one needing repairs. Later 494A had a axle you could change wheel tread width on as in wide wheel tread you could not get the 34" down rows with but put in narrow width you can go down to 28" rows. Mine is set on 30" rows with max row spacing 42".
