John T I need your help

Hello , Last week I brought home a little John Deere 3HP engine [Type E]. It seems in good shape, has lots of compression but I cant get any spark. It has a mag and igniter system and I dont understand how that works since the mag has no impulse. However I found that the magnet is broken in two and it also has a broken brush holder,so I think its doomed. I have the manuals for the engine and the mag but they are very vauge. The engine manual states that you can install a battery and coil on it but does not say how and this is where you come in. Could you please help me with a picture or a good explanation. If I could cobble a distributer onto it I would not need any help. Thank You --Harold

Harold, Sorry I"m not very smart and even less experienced on those old engine mags and igniters. Im pretty well versed in Wico C and X Magnetos used on our two banger Deeres but NOT on antique hit n miss or regular old gas engines IM OUT TO LUNCH LOL

Mayor Bob and others might help, I sure cant

Remember what Dirty Harry Callahan said in the Dirty Harry Movies ... " A Mans got to know his limitations"

Old Engine Ignition

Ground one side of a 6 volt battery to the engine. Other side goes through a coil such as from an air conditioner clutch then to the igniter. Current flows until the igniter points open at tdc which should fire it up. Don't leave the battery hooked up not running. The collapsing magnetic field of the coil gives a hotter spark than what the battery can make alone.

Teddy, Thanks a lot Teddy ,thats all I needed, also thanks John T for your information-. ------Harold
