Joining 2510 after split

I am trying to join my 2510 after splitting it to replace the clutch top plate (pto plate was broken). It is stopping I did use the special tool to get the transmission clutch disc centered.

It is stopping right about when the two guides start to meet the clutch housing. A gap of .72 inches. If anyone knows the trick to getting through this last little bit, please let me know. I tried turning the pto but it seems to be stuck slightly before the pto twines come into play.

My guess is that the clutch plate is not perfectly centered. Sometimes the special tool will "hang down" a teeny-tiny little bit and it only takes 1/32" off and then the tractor will never mate. Inspect the clutch disc and make sure the front and rear are perfectly aligned when you prepare to assemble.

Two stage clutch? Does the 2510 manual call for doing the pressure plate assembly and set up on the bench using the flywheel and both clutch friction discs as you built it? If it does, and you didn't align the discs with the tool at that time, the PTO disc and traction disc centers may not match.

Did you try the pilot bearing on the transmission shaft before installing it?

It is likely just missing going into the pilot bearing. Keep working it, wiggling and turning the engine by hand. A little pressure is one thing but don't force it together with the bolts. Keep the gap even top to bottom and side to side.

Is the rear half of the tractor on a movable stand or is it just sitting on a jack stand?? If you can roll the rear end throw it in 8th gear and rock it back and forth. Use a ratchet strap to keep a little tension on both halves so it doesn't slide apart. Another trick that helps is install a bolt and leave it out a 1/4" or so and use a prybar to pry against the head of the bolt and the clutch housing while spinning the flywheel. If you don't have a perfectly equal gap side to side use the prybar trick on whichever side is furthest away

Thanks. Yes, two stage clutch.
The pto disc is free to move around. The manual does not say to push down the pto levers, plus I couldn't exert that much force anyway (I tried ).

Well you are doing it the way I do which is the opposite of the book. It’s fine and the advantage is I can roll that front half by hand across the shop wherever I want but it’s best to be perfectly flat when trying to line it up. But it will be more difficult to line up. Often I will push and wiggle on the front tires alternately while turning pto and drawing it slowly in that will shake the whole thing slowly drawing up everything even. You also stated the pto stopped turning part way if I understand that right? I’m betting like Jim.me said you just haven’t made it into the pilot bearing. If you rotate it that bit more or to the opposite direction it will probably pop in. It sounds like you are plenty tight and pretty close to getting it. One other thing I’ve seen people do is put a slight taper on the end of that pto input shaft. If you can convince someone else to turn that pto shaft for you at the back of the tractor while tapering it can be a pretty beautifully even taper...I haven’t found this to help much and haven’t done it for awhile but it is something to try if you get to the point of giving up. Sometimes it helps to go get a sandwich or a cold beverage and relax for a minute then try again or come back to it tomorrow.

The one thing I’ve always wondered is why there can’t also be a special tool to align the splines on the transmission side. It would probably be out of alignment fairly quick after one thing or another gets rotated as it’s being put together but I just always wondered if it would help.

Sometimes I find turning the engine over by hand helps and keep pushing. Occasionally I've had to put a couple of bolts in to take the wiggle out while turning the engine and pushing will work. Just be careful not to tighten more than just enough to keep a little tension on the two half's. Walk away and come back to it and try again. Sometimes they can be very very difficult. Just be sure as others have said that you have the correct pilot bearing. Good Luck, John

Just to close out this thread...I finally got it joined. I added air to all tires to close the top gap a little bit, and that got me to within a quarter inch of joined. Lifted the front axle a tiny bit more with a floor jack and it went the rest of the way.
If I ever do this again I hope I will remember to put the crankcase ventilation tube back on before it is fully joined...what a pain!
